EATCS Council Candidate Statement

I am honored to have been nominated for the Council of the EATCS. If elected, I would be happy to serve as a Council member, and I would like to focus on the following aspects, which I believe can enrich the already-vibrant European theory community:
  • Cross-disciplinary and inter-TCS research: this is a goal many of us have, but it is not always easy to implement. As someone whose own research frequently crosses between sub-areas of TCS, I know that entering a new area can sometimes feel like learning a new language, and it requires effort. I believe we can go further towards encouraging collaboration by offering joint workshops and courses, focused on the intersection of two or more fields or sub-areas of TCS; I would like to see such workshops and tutorials at ICALP, as well as a wide variety of topics at the EATCS Young Researchers School. I have previously given or taken part in several tutorials (e.g., on communication complexity at PODC, and on interactive compression at ISIT), and am currently giving a joint course with Electrical Engineering on information theory and its applications in CS; I hope that my experience can be helpful to the council.
  • European Women in Theory: the Women in Theory workshop (WIT) is an American workshop held every two years, featuring technical talks by leading female researchers in theory. It would be wonderful to have a European equivalent, perhaps held in off-years when WIT is not. This experience can be very meaningful in female researchers' careers: I know that it was for me (I attended as a student and later on as a lecturer). Having a European WIT workshop would give us an opportunity to feature the stellar role models we have in our community, and to foster mentorship and collaboration.
