This background lecture will begin by addressing elementary biological background. Topics include the DNA, genes, chromosomes, and the transfer of genetic information from the DNA to proteins. We shall also review several biotechnological methods. A discussion of the type of questions addressed in the field of Bioinformatics will be presented with a description of some of the techniques used in solving them. Primarily, this is supposed to give a flavor of questions asked, and the choice of problems is rather arbitrary.
