Beyond Modelica: Issues in Continuous-Modeling Languages The area of continuous modeling and simulation is dominated by the market leader Matlab/Simulink. But there have been other, more interesting and more advanced languages emerging for some time, notably Modelica, which adds object-oriented features and acausality to continuous modeling. But there are further important concepts to be considered, in particular the so-called structure dynamics. Many of these principles are found in the theory of hybrid automata, but the challenge is to transfer these concepts to the realm of practical languages, simulation tools and their underlying numerical solvers.
